    School Profile

The Hazeldean Elementary Program has 140 students from kindergarten through grade six.  We are currently planning one class for each grade from kindergarten to grade six.  Our Interactions program supports students in grades 1 - 3 who are on the autism spectrum and require specialized support.

Pre-Kindergarten provides programming in a play based, language enriched environment for children with severe delays. Programming is available for children who meet criteria for PUF funding (severe delays) from 2 years and 8 months to 4 years 8 months of age by September 1.  Each classroom includes a team of professionals consisting of a teacher, educational assistants and consultants (Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and Physical Therapist). Programming will focus on communication, fine motor, gross motor, and social skills in preparation for kindergarten. All children transition into their community kindergartens when they are of age.

    Interactions

This program is designed to address the needs of students who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A range of abilities and challenges fall under this program but most apparent are the difficulties these students may have with behaviour and/or communications skills. This program provides a level of expertise that allows us to support all students who are experiencing behavioural and communication difficulties.

Our Interactions classrooms typically provide a higher ratio of adults to students (approximately 1 adult to 3 students). Students are able to benefit from more one on one targeted support. Students in our program will be included in regular classes whenever it makes academic and social sense for them to be there provided it enhances the opportunities for learning for all. Parents are active members of the learning team. An Individual Program Plan is developed with the learning team each year. At this time, we have a division one classroom for students grades 1-3.

    Elementary Program K - 6

Our Elementary Curriculum is grounded in the Alberta Government's Programs of Studies.  Your child's respective program of study identifies what students are expected to know and be able to do at each grade level.  Please click  https://www.alberta.ca/programs-of-study.aspx  to access the appropriate Program of Studies to support your child's learning.

We utilize a variety of teaching strategies to help engage our students. All students will have the opportunity to work individually, in small groups and in cooperative learning situations. We provide "hands on" learning opportunities and we believe in the value of meaningful learning in real life situations. Our students are fortunate to go on many field trips and to have opportunities to learn in the community. Our proximity to the Mill Creek Ravine enables our students to have many experiences in nature.

    New Student Registration

If your child is new to Edmonton Public Schools, you can register for school online. Visit the Division website to learn how to register for school.

    Current Division Students Pre-enrol

You will need to pre-enrol on SchoolZone to tell us the school you’d like your child to attend next year. Find important dates and deadlines and learn more about pre-enrolment, which opens between March and April each year.

    Spanish Bilingual Program Establishment

The Spanish Bilingual Program will be offered at Hazeldean School for the 2023–24 school year. The program will start with one Kindergarten class (or one Kindergarten class and one Grade 1 class, depending on demand during pre-enrolment).

As students move to the next grade, we’ll expand the program by one grade level. As long as there is sufficient demand, this process will be followed each year, meaning we’ll eventually offer the program for Grades K–6.

If there are not enough students registered by the time Kindergarten registration closes on April 14, 2023, we will work with families to determine what options are available to them.

  • School Philosophy

    School Philosophy

We, the students, staff and learning community of Hazeldean School believe that all children must receive an education that focuses on high academic achievement, a commitment to the arts, physical, social and emotional well-being and a strong sense of responsibility to the community.

    We believe:

    • we are partners with parents and with the community, and that collaboration is essential to success
    • in the worth and unique abilities of each person.
    • students learn by combining previous experiences and new knowledge.
    • learning is an intellectual, social, physical and emotional activity.
    • the arts are an essential part of education, life and the development of responsible citizens
    • physical education and well-being are central to learning and development.
    • technology is an integral part of preparing our students for the future.

The Hazeldean Pre-Kindergarten Program provides children with complex and varying needs an individualized play-based, literacy enriched program.  Each classroom establishes a safe and appropriate learning environment for Early Childhood development. We believe child-centered and developmentally appropriate programming fosters active learning, increased communication skills, and independence in our children.  Children gain a sense of pride and self-confidence as they successfully develop foundational skills in preparation for Kindergarten.

Principal's Message

At Hazeldean School, we strive to be welcoming, caring and inclusive. We have high expectations for our students, socially and academically, and we enjoy developing genuine relationships with them and their families. In our positive environment, students are able to flourish, gain confidence, explore new learning and fulfill their potential.

Our highly skilled and dedicated staff provide engaging programming for our pre-kindergarten to grade 6 and our Interactions students. We are pleased to offer high quality literacy and numeracy instruction, including Writing and Reading Workshop and Levelled Literacy Intervention. We focus on educating the whole child. Students have many opportunities to learn in nature, create, innovate and develop physical literacy.  The School Council supports field trips and opportunities to learn through the arts. This includes artists-in-residence programs, music and theatrical performances and dance.

We promote restorative practices, student leadership and citizenship. Our school's mission statement is Learn. Grow. Lead. Together. Every day we strive to live our mission. Your children are at the center of every decision we make and we thank you for placing your trust in us.
